Jayhawks Set to Host 2009 Kansas Invitational

Sept. 25, 2009

The Kansas men’s golf team, fresh off two top-three finishes to start the 2009-10 campaign, come home to host the Kansas Invitational at Alvamar Golf Club Sept. 28-29.

The Jayhawks hot start has been propelled by top-10 finishes by senior Bryan Hackenberg and junior Nate Barbee in both of the first two events. Barbee finished tied for third at the Colbert Intercollegiate, the Jayhawks’ most recent event.

The Jayhawks will be attempting to win the Kansas Invitational for the first time since 2006.

“We are playing well right now and we are going to strive to defend our home course better than we have in the last few years,” said head coach Kit Grove.

Grove will use a similar lineup that he used in the first two events, but with the addition of newcomer Jeff Bell. Bell, who finished tied for fifth at the Kansas Invitational while competing as an individual, will be joined by Hackenberg, Barbee, and freshmen Chris Gilbert and Alex Gutesha.

The rest of Grove’s squad will compete in the event as individuals. That list includes seniors Patrick Roth and Bobby Knowles, sophomores Ian Anson and Blake Giroux, and freshman Dan Waite. Waite will make his collegiate debut at event.

The Jayhawks will be joined by 13 visiting teams to comprise the 14-team field. The event will be 54 holes, with 36 holes on Monday and the final round on Tuesday. Both days will begin with shotgun starts at 8:30 a.m.

Kansas is joined in the field by three fellow Big 12 teams; Missouri, Nebraska and Oklahoma.
