Four Jayhawks Go Undefeated to Open KU Invitational

LAWRENCE, Kan. – –
Freshman Sara Lazarevic, junior Maria Martinez and sophomores Erin Wilbert and Ekaterina Morozova all went undefeated in singles play to open the KU Invitational at First Serve Tennis center.
All four girls advanced to the quarterfinals in two brackets, beating players from UMKC, Saint Louis University and Illinois State University.
Sophomore Alessandra Dzuba and freshman Victoria Khanevskaya both went 1-1 in singles play on the day.
“Everyone played really well,” said Martinez, who is 3-1 in fall season singles play. “It’s good for us to get out there and get experience in match play.”
In doubles play, Morozova and Lazarevic defeated UMKC at the No. 1 spot, recording their first win together as a doubles team.
No. 2 team Wilbert and Khanevskaya went 1-0 on the day as they defeated Saint Louis, also recording their first win as a doubles team.
“I was really proud of the way the girls came out today,” head coach Amy Hall-Holt said. “They showed a will to win and it was a great day. I felt overall we were very competitive, especially at our top spots. We’re still very young, but I feel that we’re really talented and we’ve got a lot of good things ahead of us.”
The Jayhawks will be back in action for day two of the KU Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 26. The event is free to the public.
