Sept. 25, 2009

LAWRENCE, Kan. –

Kansas women’s golf will head to Manhattan, Kan. to compete in the Marilynn Smith/Sunflower Invitational on September 28-29. The tournament will be hosted by Kansas State University and played at the Colbert Hills Golf Course. An 8:30 a.m. shotgun start will kickoff the tournament both days, with 36 holes played Monday and the remaining 18 played Tuesday.

“We are looking forward to playing at Colbert Hills this week,” said KU head coach Erin O’Neil. “Most of the team has played it and they should feel comfortable. We got off to a good start in Nebraska and hopefully we can continue with the positive strides we took there. “

The 13-team field will include K-State – which will enter two teams in the field – and other familiar foes such as Arkansas, Creighton, Houston Baptist, Illinois State, Northern Iowa, Oral Roberts, St. Johns, Tulsa, UMKC and Wichita State.

Kansas hosted the event last year and finished fifth-place overall, with Emily Powers leading the team with a first-place finish. Jennifer Clark took second place competing as an individual. Powers and Clark will compete at the event this year, along with Grace Thiry, Meghan Gockel, Kalynd Carson. Meghna Bal and Audrey Yowell will compete as individuals. This tournament marks the debut of Yowell as a Jayhawk.

The Jayhawks are coming off of a strong third-place finish at the Chip-N Club Invitational, which was hosted by Nebraska Sept. 15-16. Emily Powers led the team with a second-place medal after carding a three-round score of 213. Grace Thiry tied for 17th at the event, while Meghan Gockel and Kalynd Carson each tied for 20th. Meghna Bal rounded out the lineup as she tied for 48th. Jennifer Clark competed as an individual and finished in a tie for 38th.
