Five Jayhawks Go Undefeated in Day One of Jayhawk Invitational

Five of the eight Jayhawks competing at the Jayhawk Invitational were undefeated through the first day of the tournament.
Seniors Yuliana Svistun and Edina Horvath led the young Kansas team as each won two singles matches and one doubles match. Svistun defeated Kamal of Arkansas State (6-2, 6-3) and Cassman of Air Force (6-2, 6-3). Horvath defeated Chelminska of ASU (6-0, 6-1) and Chermel of AF (6-0, 6-1). Horvath’s doubles partner, junior Kuni Dorn, also won her two singles matches against Horner from UMKC (6-0, 6-1) and Huljev of Kansas State (6-4, 6-4), respectively. Svistun’s partner, freshman Kate Morozova, went 1-1 on the day, beating UMKC’s Emily Lindsay 6-1, 6-4 and losing to Iowa State’s Karonis 7-5, 6-3. Horvath and Dorn earned a victory over Monreal/Chermel of Air Force 8-4, while Svistun and Morozova defeated Rist/Ball of UMKC 8-3.
Sophomore Maria Martinez and freshman Erin Wilbert, KU’s third doubles tandem, also won their doubles match and two singles matches apiece. They defeated Ojdanic/Barnard of ASU 8-4. Martinez dispatched Voight of Air Force 6-1, 6-0 and Straznicka from KSU 6-3, 6-0. Wilbert came out on top against both Ball of UMKC (6-1, 6-0) and Kelemen of ISU (6-2, 6-2). The last doubles pair of freshman Allie Dzuba and sophomore Kate Goff won their doubles match against Davis/Burke of UMKC 8-3. Dzuba split her singles matches, losing to Laing of ASU (6-3, 6-2) before beating Paltugalan from Air Force (6-4, 6-1). Goff dropped both matches of the day to Johnson of Air Force (7-5, 6-3) and Davis from UMKC (6-0, 6-1).
The second day of competition will start with consolation brackets and continue with singles and doubles play. Matches begin at 10 a.m Saturday.
