LAWRENCE, Kan. – Fans will be able to get their first look at the 2012-13 Kansas swimming and diving team on Friday at 4 p.m., when the team kicks off the year with their annual intrasquad scrimmage, pitting the Crimson against Blue.

The 13-event meet, which consists mostly of sprints, middle distance and diving events, will allow the coaching staff to assess the team’s progress early in the year.

“It is an early indicator of our fitness level,” head coach Clark Campbell said. “We want to see how the team responds to competition. This is the longest break they have had as far as competing – some of them have gone two or three months without a race – so it is going to be really important that we get in and just simply compete.”

For Kansas’ seven newcomers the meet will also allow them the experience a college dual meet environment and expose the freshmen to the pressures of racing at the Division I level, without the nerves of facing another school.

“We want to see how they are receptive to that environment,” Campbell said. “They are going to have to be ready, so this is a non-pressure tune-up to get ready for the season.”

The intrasquad meet is one of several competitions this year that will see the Crimson against the Blue. After being selected at the beginning of the year by the captains, the two teams compete throughout the year in various events, such as ultimate Frisbee and road races. Points for each event are tallied at the end of the year, and the winning team enjoys a dinner served by the second-place team.

“We compete almost every day in practice in some shape or form, because we like to create that atmosphere,” Campbell said. “It is a fun, competitive thing we do, to encourage competitiveness all the time.”

The Jayhawks will take to the road for their first official meet of the season when they travel to Houston, Texas, to take on Rice on Saturday, Oct. 6, at noon. The team will host Minnesota in Robinson Natatorium on Oct. 20 at 1 p.m., which will be the first of five home events for the 2012-13 season. The Minnesota meet will serve as Senior Day for the program. The eight Jayhawk seniors will be honored before the competition.
