Martinez Leads Kansas at Day Two of Jayhawk Invitational

LAWRENCE, Kan. –

Sophomore Maria Martinez remained undefeated in match play to lead the Jayhawks in day two of the Jayhawk Invite at First Serve Tennis Center Saturday.

Martinez won both doubles matches with her partner, freshman Erin Wilbert, defeating Chuda/Stroznieka from Kansas State (8-6) and Johnson/Voight from Air Force 8-0, respectively. Martinez also earned two victories in singles play to advance to the final rounds Sunday. She dispatched Andrea Straznicka of KSU (6-3, 6-0) before defeating fellow teammate Yuliana Svistun (6-3, 6-4).

The doubles tandem of Edina Horvath and Kuni Dorn defeated Browning/Ferreira of Wichita State in five sets (9-8) and Huljev/Kudlackova of KSU (8-3). Freshman Kate Morozova and senior Svistun also won both of their matches on the day, taking the first from Cassman/Smoke of Air Force (8-3) and the second from Kelemen/Wischer of Iowa State (8-3). Freshman Allie Dzuba and sophomore Kate Goff split their doubles matches, falling to Zora / Kamal from Arkansas State (8-6) before beating Young/Poltugalan of Air Force (8-3).

In the singles brackets, Kansas went 6-5 as a team, with Martinez the only Jayhawk to win both her matches. Wilbert split, beating Kelemen of Iowa State (6-2, 6-2) and dropping a match to Weatherholt of Nebraska (6-2, 6-0). Horvath, Dorn and Dzuba each lost her only singles match of the day. Geibert of Nebraska defeated Horvath (6-4, 6-4), Dorn lost to Karonis of Iowa State (6-3, 3-6, (6)) and Dzuba lost to Chuda of Kansas State (6-3, 6-2). Goff was able to defeat Titus of UMKC (6-3, 6-2) in consolation, while Svistun won her first match against Cassman of Air Force (6-2, 6-3) before losing to Martinez.

The final day of competition begins at 9 a.m Sunday.
