LAWRENCE, Kan.—Grace Thiry is in second place and Katy Nugent is tied for fourth and the Kansas women’s golf team is in first place following the first two rounds of the Marilynn Smith Sunflower Invitational on Monday.

“I’m very pleased with our second round,” said head coach Erin O’Neil. “Katy played awesome to shoot three under par. Meghna (Bal) and Grace filled in real well and Fhong (Boonraksasat) turned it around. Everybody stepped it up in the afternoon. We’re excited to be in the lead.”

Nugent’s second round score of 69 is the second lowest one round total by a Jayhawk at the Marilynn Smith Sunflower Invitational. Only Amanda Costner’s 67 in 2005 is better.

“I felt really comfortable in the afternoon round,” said Nugent. “I gave myself a lot of opportunities and was able to capitalize on them.”

The Jayhawks were in a tie for fifth place following the first round, but a second round score of 290 helped the team jump ahead of leader Nebraska for possession of first place. The team’s 290 in the second round is the second best one round score by a Jayhawk team in school history. The 2007 team posted a 286 at the Mountain View Collegiate in 2007.

“It might have been a little bit of nerves,” said O’Neil of the team’s improvement following the first round. “When you host your own event there’s a bit more pressure.”

Senior Meghna Bal shook off a first round score of 80 to turn in an even par in the second round to finish the first day in 13th place.

Fhong Boonraksasat is tied for 27th and Maria Jackson is in a tie for 40th.

Competing as individuals, Jennifer Clark is in a tie for 35th with a 159 on the day, Meghan Potee is in a tie for 43rd and Audrey Yowell is in a tie for 45th.

The final round of the Marilynn Smith Invitational will be held on Tuesday morning beginning at 8:30 a.m.
