SIMPSONVILLE, Ky. – Alex Gutesha improved two positions on the final day of the Cardinal Intercollegiate to tie for 10th place, finishing with a two-round score of even-par to lead the Kansas men’s golf team at the event hosted by Louisville at the Cardinal Club Golf Course.

Kansas also improved in the standings as a team, moving from 14th to 10th place in the final round of an 18-team event that was shortened to 36 holes due to rain Monday. The Jayhawks posted a 298 Tuesday, led by Gutesha’s round of 73, which earned him his third career top-10 finish.

“Alex played solid,” said Kansas head coach Kit Grove. “He hit 16 out of 18 greens in regulation. That’s a super-high percentage, but he didn’t do a lot on the greens. He didn’t putt bad, but he didn’t putt well.”

Putting has been the Achilles’ heel for the Jayhawks thus far in the fall season. With three weeks until the next tournament, coach Grove said that will be a primary focus in practice.

“We’re a lot better from tee to green than we’ve been in the past three or four years,” said Grove. “We’re giving away shots on the green, and it’s killing our scores. It’s a lack of execution. We’ll get back and practice. We will re-qualify for the next event at the end of this week and then get some more practice in before Kiawah (Oct. 17-18). (The ability to shoot low) is there, but we have to execute. Tenth place (as a team) is not what we’re trying to accomplish.”

Junior Chris Gilbert improved by one shot Tuesday with a final round 74 to end the tournament with a two-round total of 149, which placed him 33rd. It marked only the second time in his last 15 events that Gilbert finished outside the top 25.

Junior Paul Harris and freshman Dylan McClure each improved upon their first-round scores on day two with rounds of 76 and 75, respectively, to finish in a tie for 65th place with four golfers at 11-over for the tournament. Senior Doug Quinones placed just ahead of them with an overall score of 10-over to tie for 62nd place.

Kansas will have the next two weeks off before competing in The Invitational, Oct. 17-18, at Kiawah Island, S.C.
