Hawks, Cops and Kids To Be Held Saturday

Sept. 28, 2005

LAWRENCE, Kan. –

Approximately 190 local kids from the Big Brothers Big Sisters program will join several University of Kansas student-athletes and local law enforcement officials for a day fun and learning at Hawks, Cops and Kids on Saturday, Oct. 1. The event will run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and will be held at a variety of interactive stations located throughout the Horejsi Family Athletics Center, Anschutz Pavilion and the Anderson Family Strength Complex.

Hawks, Cops and Kids will provide an exciting opportunity for youth in six surrounding counties in grades 3-8 to meet and interact with law enforcement professionals and KU student-athletes. The students will be divided into groups and escorted to stations where they will learn about personal safety/stranger danger, internet safety, anti-drug awareness, and health and nutrition. The health and nutrition station will be led by Associate Director of Strength and Conditioning Andrea Hudy. The kids will also have a chance to participate in basketball, track and field, rowing, and football stations led by student-athletes from those respective sports. Additionally, student-athletes from a wide range of teams will escort and cheer on the kids as they participate in the activities.

Last year’s event was a huge success. More than 75 student-athletes hosted approximately 75 youngsters for the day.

Phill Kline, attorney general for the state of Kansas, will also be in attendance.
