No. 23 Kansas Falls 1-0 at Baylor

WACO, Texas – Baylor forward Lisa Sliwinski’s goal with just over four minutes remaining in regulation broke a scoreless tie and lifted the Bears to a 1-0 triumph over No. 23 Kansas Friday evening at the Betty Lou Mays Soccer Field.

The Jayhawks drop their first conference match of the season and move to 1-1 in Big 12 play and 7-3-1 overall. Baylor improves to 10-1-2 overall and 1-0-1 in conference play.

After successfully defending the home team for 86 minutes, Sliwinski found the back of the net after a breakaway down the far sideline. The senior midfielder gathered a loose ball 35 yards away from goal, slashed towards the box and fired a shot into the top left corner of the goal from 10 yards out.

It was the lone breakdown in the Jayhawk defense Friday night. Sophomore goalkeeper Kaitlyn Stroud made eight saves, while Kansas withstood 23 shots by the home team, allowing just the one goal.
KU also successfully defended 11 corner kicks in the match and a handful of opportunities on free kicks in the Jayhawk zone.

Kansas had opportunities to score earlier in the match, but could not find the back of the net. KU collected seven shots in the match half and put three on net, all in the second half.

Senior midfielder Whitney Berry led the Jayhawks with a pair of shots, while freshman Ashley Williams also had a shot on net.

Stroud’s eight saves were a season high and the most by the sophomore since making nine saves at Missouri last season.

Kansas will complete the weekend against TCU Sunday at 1 p.m.
