Jayhawk Softball Announces 2007 Schedule

Sept. 29, 2006

LAWRENCE, Kan. –

Six early-season tournaments and 15 games at Arrocha Ballpark highlight the 2007 University of Kansas softball schedule, head coach Tracy Bunge announced Friday. The Jayhawks will open their season February 8-11 at the Campbell Cartier Tournament in San Diego, Calif., and look to defend their league title at the 2007 Big 12 Conference Championship May 9-12 in Oklahoma City, Okla.

“We are excited about the 2007 schedule,” Bunge said. “We are going to some new places and will have a chance to see some teams that we have never played before. It will give this young team a chance to grow and yet be prepared for the tough Big 12 schedule.”

KU is scheduled to play 57 regular-season games with only 15 of those contests at home over 12 days. The Jayhawks will open their home season at Arrocha Ballpark with the Jayhawk Classic March 9-11 and host Baylor (March 31 & April 1), Arkansas (April 3), Nebraska (April 4), Texas A&M (April 14 & 15), Missouri (April 18) and Oklahoma (April 28 & 29).

The Jayhawks will face at least 16 teams (in 22 games) from the 2006 NCAA Regional field in 2007, including UC Santa Barbara, Cal, Oregon State, San Diego State, Louisville, Iowa, Missouri State, Baylor and Texas.

Kansas returns 10 letterwinners and six starters, including senior pitcher and All-Big 12 First Team selection Kassie Humphreys, and welcomes nine newcomers to the 2007 squad. In 2006, the Jayhawks won the Big 12 Championship, finished 36-26 overall (8-10 in Big 12 play) and advanced to the NCAA Regionals for the second-straight season.

The Jayhawks continue Fall Ball this weekend (Sept. 30 & Oct. 1) at Arrocha Ballpark. KU went 3-1 to open preseason play last weekend in Lawrence.
