DES MOINES, Iowa – Senior Kara Boston led the Kansas rowing team with two gold medals at the Head of the Des Moines regatta in Des Moines, Iowa on Saturday. Boston won the Collegiate Single race and teamed with fellow senior Elisheva Patterson to win the Collegiate Double event.

Kansas took home the top three spots in the Collegiate Double event. Boston and Patterson won the race in a time of 21 minutes and 18 seconds. Abbi Huderle and Carrie Selden’s boat grabbed second place in a time of 21:45, while Megan Heacock and Brooke Castrop captured the bronze with a time of 22:37.

In the Collegiate Eight event, Kansas placed third and sixth. KU finished behind rivals Kansas State and Tulsa, but many of the Jayhawk rowers were competing in their second race of the morning.

Kansas dominated the Collegiate Single event by placing nine Jayhawks in the Top 10. Boston won the event in a time of 24:32, which was over a minute faster than the next closest competitor.

The Jayhawks also won the Collegiate Quad event in convincing fashion. The boat consisting of Erika Fisher, Kaitlin Squier, Brittany Belford and Abby Green won the event in a time of 13:57. Kansas’ other two boats finished second and third, respectively.

“I think we did pretty well,” said Kansas head coach Rob Catloth. “It was a training event, where everyone rowed in two or three events. We gained some really good experience and I was pleased with our technique today.”

“We are really young,” said Catloth. “But I’m really pleased with the talent level. I think we are setup very good for the future. I also think we are very deep.”

Kansas’s next regatta is scheduled for October 28 in Iowa City, Iowa at the Head of the Iowa.
