Avdeeva fell in heated contest, 6-4, 7-6 (5), in the first round of the event, which is being played at UCLA. The Obninsk, <?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>Russia native needed to win three matches in order to advance to the qualifying draw.

Despite bowing out early in singles play, Avdeeva still has a chance for success at the Championships, as she will join teammate Edina Horvath in opening-round play of the qualifying doubles bracket on Tuesday.

The tandem, ranked 36th in the country, will look equal the success of a second-place finish at last weekend’s Cissie Leary Tournament.
