Mangino Announces Kansas Players Of The Week

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas Head Football Coach Mark Mangino announced the players of the week for the Jayhawks’ game against Southern Mississippi last Saturday. KU snapped USM’s eight-game win streak with a 35-28 victory.

Kerry Meier was the offensive selection, Daymond Patterson, the defensive pick and Alonso Rojas, the special teams choice. Scout team offense player of the week was Deshaun Sands, while the defensive player was Kevin Young.

Meier recorded a career-high 141 yards and two touchdowns on a season-best 10 catches. He scored the game’s first touchdown on a 62-yard reception and then scored the game-winning touchdown on a 12-yard toss in the fourth quarter.

Patterson, a 5-9 cornerback, registered four tackles and a career-best three passes broken up, while facing bigger Southern Miss wide receivers, including 6-6 DeAndre Brown.

Rojas averaged 39.8 yards on five punts, dropping two inside the 20 and recording a season-long 52-yarder.

Ranked No. 18, No. 16 and No. 16 by the Associated Press, USA Today and Harris Interactive polls respectively, Kansas has a bye week before hosting Iowa State in its annual homecoming game on Saturday, Oct. 10. The Big 12 opener for the Jayhawks will kickoff at 11:30 a.m. and be televised on Versus.
