MANHATTAN, Kan. – Emily Powers fired a final-round 73 en route to a seventh-place individual finish to help Kansas to a sixth-place team finish at the Marilynn Smith Sunflower Women’s Golf Invitational on Tuesday.

Powers fired a one-over par 73 on the final day to shoot 231. It marked her second straight top-10 finish as she was the runner-up in the season-opening Chip-N Club Invitational earlier this month.

The Jayhawks shot a 305 on Tuesday for a 954 total. Tulsa won the event at 901 followed by Arkansas at 904. Host Kansas State was third at 947 with Illinois State (948) and Wichita State (952) just ahead of KU.

“We never really got anything going during the tournament,” said Kansas Head Coach Erin O’Neil. “Emily played well and had a good finish. On Monday afternoon we gave away a lot of shots on the last three holes and didn’t finish like we wanted to.”

KU’s Jennifer Clark shot a final-day 79 to tie for 29th at 240. Grace Thiry had the team’s second-best score on Tuesday with a 76 to tie for 37th at 243. Meghan Gockel also tied for 37th while Kaylnd Carson rounded out the Jayhawk fivesome tied for 54th at 254.

Two Jayhawks played as individuals as Meghna Bal tied for 33rd at 242 and Audrey Yowell tied for 51st at 252.

Kansas will return to action when it competes in the Johnie Imes Inviational at Columbia, Mo. on Oct. 5-6.

“We will regroup this week and work on our short games and get ready for Missouri,” O’Neil said.
