Senior Ekaterina Morozova and sophomore Dylan Windom have been selected as a doubles team to the main draw of the 2011 ITA/Riviera Women’s All-American Tennis Championships. Morozova also earned a spot in the qualifying singles draw. The remainder of the University of Kansas women’s tennis team will travel to Lexington, Ky., to compete in the Kentucky Invitational Friday-Sunday.

Morozova will compete in the qualifying singles draws Oct. 4-5 in Pacific Palisades, Calif. If she makes it through the qualifiers, she will compete in the main draws Oct. 6-9, when she will already be competing with Windom in the main doubles draws on those dates.

Morozova and Windom become the first Kansas tennis athletes to be selected straight to the main draw since Eveline Hamers qualified in 1990.

“I am very excited for the opportunity that both Dylan and Kate have in this tournament,” Kansas head coach Amy Hall-Holt said. “It is a great honor to be in these draws, especially for the doubles team getting in the main draw. It’s been special to see them grow and I am excited to see what they can accomplish against the elite competition.”

KU’s doubles team will be one of 24 tandems in the main draw, which will consist of seven at-large (and wild card) selections, four teams from the qualifying tournament, the ITA National Summer Championships champions and one team from each region.

Last season, Morozova and Windom ended the season ranked fifth in the Central Region and No. 67 nationally by ITA. The duo went 15-7 in No. 1 doubles play, including a 6-5 record in the Big 12 and a 2-1 record against nationally-ranked opponents. They were also named to the All-Big 12 Doubles Team.

KU’s No. 1 doubles pair was also invited to the pre-qualifying doubles round of the 2010 ITA/Riviera Women’s All-American Tennis Championships, marking the first KU team since 2007 to be invited to the elite event.

While Morozova and Windom are in California, the rest of the KU team will be in Lexington, Ky., competing in the Kentucky Invitational. At the Invite, KU will compete against Kentucky, Purdue, Moorehead State, Eastern Kentucky, Evansville, Armstrong Atlantic, Cleveland State, Miami (Ohio) and Austin Peay. The tournament takes place in the Hillary J. Boone Varsity Tennis Complex on UK’s campus Friday through Sunday.

“After seeing what we did in our own tournament, I’m really excited to see how we perform this weekend at the Kentucky Invitational,” Hall-Holt said. “We have some talented players and I hope that we can build on what we did at our tournament.”

Sophomore Claire Dreyer was crowned champion of the Singles Draw E at the 2011 Kansas Invitational, held at the Jayhawk Tennis Center Sept. 16-18. The Jayhawks went 7-5 in singles play and 4-2 in doubles competition during the home tournament.
