Smith Leads Jayhawks in Day One of Hoosier Classic

Sept. 30, 2005

BLOOMINGTON, Ind.– Sophomore Stephanie Smith advanced to the championship match of the flight E singles bracket, highlighting Kansas’ showing at day one of the Hoosier Classic. The Salina, Kan. native topped Murray State’s Anne Pennington and Kansas State’s Tereza Prochazkova on her way to the final round. Smith will face Maria Perevoschilkova of Kansas State for the title.

While Smith was the only Jayhawk to record a victory in her opening-round match, Kansas saw its share of success later in the day. Freshman Edina Horvath advanced to the consolation final of the flight C bracket after dropping her first contest. Horvath will shoot for a fifth-place finish as she takes on Sigrid Fischer of Indiana. Also advancing to the consolation title match of her bracket was junior Ashley Filberth. She will compete for fifth in the flight E bracket against Daysi Espinal of LSU.

Despite her team’s first-round struggles, Head Coach Amy Hall-Holt feels that day one was still successful. “Obviously, we are very pleased with Stephanie’s play today,” Hall-Holt said. “Ashley (Filberth) and Edina (Horvath) were also impressive battling back after dropping their first match.”

“We faced some very tough competition today, and although we may not have had the outcome we were hoping for in the opening matches, I feel that we battled hard and played well throughout the day,” Hall-Holt added.

The Jayhawks will resume play at the Hoosier Classic at 10 a.m. on Saturday, with two rounds of doubles contests scheduled to take place. The tournament will then conclude on Sunday.
