COLUMBIA, Mo.— A season-low total 221 from junior Emily Powers helped propel the Kansas women’s golf team to a fifth place finish at the Johnie Imes Invitational Tuesday in Columbia, Mo. After shooting back-to-back rounds of 306 on Monday, the team finished strong with a third-round total 301 at the Club of Old Hawthorne.

Powers’ performance was good for a sixth place tie in the individual standings. The junior from Quincy, Ill., now has two top-10 finishes on the season. Last week she finished first at the Marilynn Smith Invitational in Lawrence.

Also performing well for the Jayhawks were sophomores Meghna Bal and Jennifer Clark, who tied for 14th place with scores of 228. Rounding out the Kansas lineup were sophomore Grace Thiry (237, t39) and freshman Kalynd Carson (246, t62).

Kansas now has two top-five finishes in the fall season. In its first tournament of the season, the Chip-N-Club Invitational in Lincoln, Neb., the Jayhawks also finished fifth.

Mississippi finished first in the team standings after overtaking both Arkansas-Little Rock and Missouri in the final round. The Rebels’ third round total of 301 was, along with Kansas, the lowest score on the day. Julia Potter of host Missouri took home the individual title with a 54-hole total 209.

The Jayhawks return to action Oct. 6-7 when they head to Lubbock, Texas to compete in the Jeannie McHaney Invitational. Check back to kuathletics.com for complete coverage of the team’s fall season.
