Fall Ball Report #3

Sept. 30, 2010

LAWRENCE, Kan. –

Kansas baseball held its third scrimmage of the fall Thursday afternoon at Hoglund Ballpark, with Rock Chalk defeating the Jayhawks, 4-3. Junior first baseman Zac Elgie, senior outfielder Jimmy Waters, freshman Alex Harris and junior Jake Marasco all recorded multiple hits in the game.

In the sixth inning, Waters and Elgie nearly hit back-to-back extra base hits, however two highlight reel catches from center fielder Jordan Brown and right fielder Casey Lytle kept them at bay.

Compared to the first weekend of games, the defense was a lot sharper as the teams combined to commit just three errors – all in the infield.

The pitching was also sharper. Senior T.J. Walz and sophomore Tanner Poppe pitched for the two teams. Poppe tossed three scoreless innings, allowing just two singles in his time on the hill, while after allowing a first-inning run, Walz recorded back-to-back shutout innings in the second and third.

Junior Colton Murray also tossed a scoreless inning of relief – his third of the fall.

The teams will scrimmage again Friday at 4 p.m. before taking the weekend off.
