Doubles Play Highlights Day One of Kentucky Invitational

LEXINGTON, Ky. –

Kentucky Invite Updated Draws Get Acrobat Reader

Two Kansas women’s tennis doubles teams made it to the finals of their respective draws on the first day of the Kentucky Invitational in Lexington, Ky. KU went 4-2 in singles competition and 5-1 in doubles play in the tournament that consists of athletes from Kentucky, Purdue, Moorehead State, Eastern Kentucky, Evansville, Armstrong Atlantic, Cleveland State, Miami (Ohio) and Austin Peay.

The duo of sophomores Paulina Los and Monica Pezzotti defeated Khristina Blajkevitch and Jessica Stiles from Kentucky, 8-6, before besting Jennifer Rabot and Mara Schmidt of Purdue, 8-5, in the semifinals of Doubles Draw A. In Doubles Draw B, freshman Karen Hernandez and sophomore transfer Claire Dreyer beat Kentucky’s CeCe Witten and Misha Testerman, 8-5, then defeated Aleksandra Dzakula and Jessica Raatz of Evansville, 8-4, to reach the finals of that draw.

In singles competition, Los and Pezzotti also won their first round singles matches on the first day of the Invite. Los, a sophomore from Gdansk, Poland, took down Evansville’s Natasha James, 6-4, 6-3, in Singles Draw B while Pezzotti, a junior from Cucuta, Colombia, defeated Kelsey Costales of Evansville, 6-0, 6-3, in Singles Draw E.

Junior Victoria Khanevskaya beat first round opponent Saioa Oscoz from Eastern Kentucky, 6-4, 7-6(3), in Singles Draw F. In Singles Draw G, sophomore Amy Barnthouse also defeated her first competitor, Jessica Gardefjord of Armstrong Atlantic, 7-6(4), 6-1.
