More Top Ten Finishes Conclude Weekend at Head of the Oklahoma

Sept. 30, 2012

Oklahoma City, Okla. – The Head of the Oklahoma regatta concluded on Sunday with members of the KU rowing team participating in the singles and the four divisions. The Head of the Oklahoma was the first competition of the fall season for the Jayhawks.

In the singles, KU had three rowers finish in the top ten. Freshman Maggie Duncan led the way for KU in sixth while junior Alexandra Torquemada finished eighth and senior Olivia Kinet came in tenth. The top five places were taken by rowers from Oklahoma City University and the University of Massachusetts.

“I think we are pleased with the single. The Oklahoma City and UMass kids work on this all summer so being in the mix with them is good,” KU head coach Rob Catloth said. “We are really proud of Maggie as a freshman moving up to the college level and having a good race when we don’t train in a single boat all the time.”

The morning concluded with KU grabbing five of the top 12 places in the Open Four. KU boats took fourth, fifth, seventh, eleventh, and twelfth.

“The local colleges stay and compete on the second day and we just try to get the kids another race,” Catloth said. “We are just trying to get these kids as many races as we can.

The main thing we are trying to do is get them to improve.” The fall season continues on Nov. 3-4 in Chattanooga, Tenn. as the Jayhawks participate in The Head of the Hooch regatta.
