Softball Goes Undefeated In Pink Classic

Oct. 1, 2007

LAWRENCE, Kan. –

Another undefeated weekend by the Kansas softball squad improved the Jayhawks to 6-0 during their fall season. In last weekend’s Jayhawk Pink Classic, KU registered victories over Iowa Central, Emporia State and Washburn, while also raising over $5,400 for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.

On Saturday afternoon, Kansas put away Iowa Central 18-1 in a shortened three-inning game. Freshman pitcher Allie Clark allowed just two hits and tallied three strikeouts in three innings of work for the win. At the plate, juniors Elle Pottorf, Dougie McCaulley and Val Chapple and freshman Kolby Fesmire all had two hits a piece.

In KU’s second game of the day, junior hurler Val George struck out 10 batters to help the Jayhawks to a 5-1 victory over Emporia. The offense was powered by sophomore Sara Ramirez’s home run and a pair of doubles from newcomer Brittany Hile.

Kansas wrapped up the tournament Sunday with a 10-0 shutout against Washburn. Sophomore Sarah Vertelka notched the win from the circle allowing just two hits in five innings of work and tallying three K’s. Hile again led from the batter’s box going a perfect 3-for-3 in the game including another double. Clark pitched in a pair of hits, while the rest of the lineup all finished the game with at least one hit.

“Overall we had a very successful weekend,” said coach Tracy Bunge. “The offense seems to be setting the pace for the fall outscoring our opponents 52-4 so far. Each game, a different player seems to step up and contribute offensively, which shows the depth of our lineup this year.”

Softball will close out its fall season this weekend when it hosts the Jayhawk Classic. The tournament begins on Saturday with a contest against Johnson County CC at 2 p.m. and another game versus Central Missouri State at 4 p.m. The Classic will wrap up Sunday with a noon match versus UMKC.
