Kansas Rowing Starts Season at Boot of the Oklahoma

Oct. 1, 2009

LAWRENCE, Kan.—Kansas rowing starts the 2009-10 campaign on Saturday, Oct. 3 at the Boot of the Oklahoma in Oklahoma City, Okla. The Jayhawks placed second at last fall’s Boot of the Oklahoma marking a strong start to the fall season.

The regatta pits Kansas against host school Oklahoma City University, Big 12 Conference foes Oklahoma and Texas as well as SMU and others.

Kansas will be facing Oklahoma for only the third time as the Sooners enter their second season of rowing. Last season’s match-up between the two teams at Oklahoma was cancelled due to weather. Oklahoma’s results at the Big 12 Championship did not count because they failed to field a full varsity team.

Last season the Jayhawks defeated the Longhorns in the Varsity Four at Wyandotte County Lake in the teams’ only head-to-head meeting.

Kansas faces SMU for the first time since 2007 when the Jayhawks faced the Mustangs at Austin, Texas. Kansas finished ahead of SMU in each race the two teams entered. Kansas was scheduled to face SMU at last season’s regatta at Oklahoma that was cancelled due to weather.

Kansas will continue the fall season next Saturday, Oct. 10 at the Sunflower Showdown with Kansas State in Manhattan, Kan.
