Khanevskaya, Doubles Teams Sweep Day One of Notre Dame Tennis Tournament
Oct. 1, 2010
SOUTH BEND, Ind. –
Kansas tennis sophomore Victoria Khanevskaya and all three of KU’s doubles teams went undefeated Friday, to highlight the Jayhawks’ first day of play in Notre Dame’s Eck Classic.
The Jayhawks opened the three-day tournament competing in three 16-player singles draws and three eight-team doubles draws, going up against players from six other schools. Khanevskaya and fellow sophomore Sara Lazarevic made it past the round of 16 in their respective draws, while all three Kansas doubles teams advanced to the quarterfinals in the doubles flights.
In her first match of the day, Khanevskaya defeated Hannah Furmanova from Miami (Ohio), 7-5, 6-4, to advance to the round of eight in the Green Singles Draw. She then easily downed Dayton’s Chelsea Gankler 6-2, 6-0, to advance to the quarterfinals, where she will face Kathie Thome, also out of MU.
Lazarevic won her opening match in the Gold Draw, going 6-1, 6-3 against Dayton’s Laina Grote. Facing Ewa Szatkowska of Tulsa in the second round, Lazarevic came out strong with a 6-3 win in the first set. But with a 6-3 loss in the second, Szatkowska forced a third set, and overtook Lazarevic 10-6 for the win. Lazarevic will play tomorrow in the Gold Draw’s second consolation bracket.
Dylan Windom bounced back from an opening-round loss with a win in the Gold Draw’s first consolation bracket. Windom claimed a second-set tiebreaker against Dayton’s Claire McNulty, going 6-3, 7-6 (6), to advance to the Gold flight’s consolation draw. Akron’s Prang Pantusart awaits the KU freshman in the quarterfinals.
The remaining Kansas singles players struggled Friday, with Paulina Los, Monica Pezzotti, and Kate Goff all going 0-2 on the day. The four will play in Saturday and Sunday’s extra singles rounds.
While the Jayhawks may have struggled in singles, they dominated in doubles. Lazarevic and Pezzotti defeated Ohio State’s Kara Cecil and Fidan Manshirova, 8-4, Los and Windom downed Akron’s Anya Baronayte and Natasha Kuvakina, 8-2, and Khanevskaya and Goff took Jeremie Benjamin and Carolina Castro-Cota, also from Akron, with an 8-6 score to complete the doubles sweep.
Play continues Saturday morning, at the Eck Tennis Center in South Bend, Ind.
