Kansas Women's Golf Claims Marilynn Smith/Sunflower Tournament

Oct. 2, 2007

MANHATTAN, Kan. — A thunderstorm forced the cancellation of the final round of the Marilynn Smith/Sunflower women’s golf tournament here Tuesday so Kansas claimed the tournament title as the 36-hole leader after Monday’s two rounds.<?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>

The team championship was the first for KU since winning this same tournament last season.

Camilla Svensson was KU’s top finisher, tying for fourth at three-over par 147. Teammates Meghan Bal and Grace Thiry tied for seventh with totals of 149, but were playing as individuals and their scores did not count towards KU’s team score.

The Jayhawks held a two shot margin over <?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>Missouri after the first two rounds on Monday. KU opened the tournament with a 302, which trailed only host KansasState (299) in the morning. In the afternoon, the Jayhawks fired a tournament-best 298 for a 600 total, while KSU slipped to a 306.

Missouri shot 303-299 for a 602 score, while TexasState and KansasState tied for third at 605 in the 13-team tournament.

Svensson, a sophomore, who was playing in her first tournament of the year, shot a 75 in the morning and an even-par 72 in the afternoon to finish at 147. Julia Potter of Missouri claimed medalist honors with a one-under par total of 143.

Bal and Thiry shot identical scores of 74-75 for 149 totals.
