Swimming and Diving Opens 2004-05 Season

LAWRENCE, Kan. – The University of Kansas swimming and diving team will open its 2004-05 season on Friday (Oct. 8), with an intrasquad meet at the Robinson Natatorium. Friday’s event will serve as a warm-up for a flurry of meets beginning Oct. 14, when Kansas hosts Texas, followed by the Big 12 Relays (Oct. 15), and ending in a dual meet against Texas A&M (Oct. 16th), all in Robinson Natatorium in Lawrence, Kan.
“Our 2004-05 schedule has a great mix of events to get us ready for the Big 12 and NCAA Championships,” third-year head swimming coach Clark Campbell said. “Kicking off the season with a dual meet versus a top 10 school like Texas is an enormous challenge, but we are ready to take that step. We’re focused right now on preparing for the Nike Cup in November. This allows the coaching staff to fine-tune the program for the championships in February and March.”
The Jayhawks return 19 letterwinners, including six seniors, from a team that finished 9-3 in dual meets and third at the Big 12 Conference Championships. One of the returning seniors, Amy Gruber, is fresh off her second consecutive trip to the NCAA Championships last season. The Bigelow, Ark., native, was also selected to the All-Big 12 Swimming and Diving First Team. The divers, led by first-year diving coach Eric Elliott, has high expectations for the divers including sophomore Shelby Noonan, the lone NCAA Zone Diving qualifier for the Jayhawks last season. The Jayhawks will also look for team points from five strong newcomers that have joined the 2004-05 roster.
The 2004-05 intrasquad meet gets underway at 6 p.m., Friday, Oct. 8, in the Robinson Natatorium.
