Texas Upends No. 19 Kansas, 2-1

AUSTIN, Texas – Texas sophomore Kylie Doniak’s successful penalty kick in the 78th minute broke a one-all tie and gave the Longhorns a 2-1 triumph over No. 19 Kansas Sunday afternoon at Mike A. Myers Stadium.

The Jayhawks suffer their first two-loss weekend of the season and drop to 8-4-1 overall and 0-3 in the Big 12, while Texas improves to 5-5-2 overall and 2-0-2 in the conference.

Kansas scored early in the second half to take a 1-0 lead, but could not hold it.

After putting numbers in the box, Texas was fouled setting up Doniak for her game-winning penalty kick. The sophomore fired low into the near side of the net, marking the fourth pk that Kansas has surrendered in the last three matches.

The Jayhawks took a 1-0 lead early in the second half, as junior Caitlin Noble deflected in her third goal of the season. After freshman Whitney Berry’s shot from the near side of the box was stopped by goalkeeper Alexa Gaul, Berry collected the long rebound and fired a cross to the far post where Noble got a head on the ball to direct it into the net at 58:30. It was Noble’s second goal of the weekend.

The Longhorns evened the match on a mishit by Becca Rivera that eluded goalkeeper Julie Hanley. Rivera took a bad angle shot which Hanley couldn’t handle and bounced into the net at 66:16.

KU held a 14-10 advantage in shots, including an 8-3 edge in shots on goal. Noble and freshman Shelby Williamson led the Jayhawks with three shots each.

Kansas will look to regroup next Friday with its first Big 12 match at the Jayhawk Soccer Complex this season on Friday, Oct. 9 against Texas Tech at 4 p.m.
