Tennis Qualifies Six Individuals, Three Doubles Teams for ITA Central Region Championships

Oct. 5, 2005

LAWRENCE, Kan.– The University of Kansas tennis team has qualified six individuals, as well as three doubles tandems, for the 2005 ITA Central Region Women’s Tennis Championships. Qualifiers for the main singles draw are Christine Skoda and Elizaveta Avdeeva. Skoda, an Edmonton, Alberta native and the team’s lone senior, has posted a solid 4-4 record in singles play so far this fall. Avdeeva, a sophomore, has started the season1-5 in singles play.

Along with Skoda and Avdeeva, sophomore Lauren Hommell, junior Brittany Brown and freshmen Ksenia Bukina and Edina Horvath will also see action at the tournament. However, they must first win two rounds of qualifying play in order to advance to the main draw.

The Jayhawks’ three doubles teams that qualified are the most that any single school can send to the tournament. Kansas’ duos of Avdeeva and Bukina, Hommell and Horvath, and Brown and Skoda will compete in doubles action.

“We are very impressed with our number of qualifiers,” said head coach Amy Hall-Holt. “We are especially pleased about sending all of our doubles teams that we had hoped to.”

The Championships will begin with qualifying matches on Oct. 19 taking place in Salt Lake City, Utah. The main draw will then begin on Oct. 20 and run through Oct. 23.
