Kansas Brings in Baker University for Fall Matchup

Oct. 5, 2011

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas will look to keep its fall ball success rolling when the Jayhawk softball team welcomes Baker University to Arrocha Ballpark for a Thursday night meeting. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.

Kansas will host a Baker squad that finished the 2011 season with a 31-21 record. Entering Thursday’s contest, the Jayhawk pitching staff has yet to allow a single run, racking up three shutout victories and 36 strikeouts halfway through the fall slate. In their last outing, the Jayhawk hitters pounded out 15 runs on 25 hits to sweep Washburn and Butler County Community College on Oct. 2.

Freshman pitcher Alicia Pille and junior transfer pitcher Morgan Druhan have 13 strikeouts apiece heading into Thursday’s game, but head coach Megan Smith has been happy with the work she’s seen out of all of her pitchers in the fall.

In her last time out, junior shortstop Mariah Montgomery led a potent Jayhawk offense, going 6-for-8 with three RBI and three doubles as one of the many offensive forces the Jayhawks will display later this spring.

Junior left fielder Maggie Hull was a single shy of a cycle against Johnson County in the fall opener, and slammed a double and a two-RBI single in the victory against Butler on Sunday. Smith also expressed her satisfaction with her lineup as a whole, making a special note to point out the team’s slap hitters, sophomore Elsa Moyer and freshman Cassen Salamone.
