LAWRENCE, Kan. –

Three players batted in three runs apiece en route to Kansas softball’s 16-1 trouncing of Johnson County Community College Wednesday night at Arrocha Ballpark in the Jayhawks’ second contest of the fall.

Sophomores Maggie Hull, Rosie Hull and Mariah Montgomery each recorded three RBIs for Kansas. Rosie and Montgomery had three hits apiece. Freshman Ashley Newman was the third Jayhawk to tally multiple hits as she recorded three base hits. KU out-hit JCCC 15-4 during the game.

Redshirt junior Liz Kocon helped score the Jayhawks’ first two runs of the game with a two-out home run in the first inning, while three additional players provided an RBI during the game.

Kansas exploded for eight runs in the bottom of the second frame, including a bases-loaded triple from Maggie Hull to give KU a commanding 10-0 lead after two innings.

The Jayhawks used a pair of RBI singles and took advantage of an error to put up three more runs in the third. Another JCCC error in the fourth inning, one of four during the game, helped plate an additional runner in the fourth. Montgomery scored Kansas’ last two runs of the contest in the bottom of the fifth frame with a home run.

Freshman pitcher Kristin Martinez drew the start from the circle and tossed the first three innings. She struck out two batters and allowed no walks, while giving up just one unearned run. Junior transfer Ashley Spencer pitched a scoreless fourth before sophomore Alex Jones entered to close out the game. Jones fanned four batters in her scoreless relief.

Kansas, which defeated Baker University last week in its fall opener, will conclude its fall season this weekend, Oct. 9-10, during its Jayhawk Invitational. KU will face Seminole State Community College and Washburn on Saturday at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., respectively. Sunday the Jayhawks take on Butler County Community College at 2 p.m. and Labette County Community College at 4 p.m.
