Two Jayhawks Win Singles Flights at Tribe Invitational

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The Kansas women’s tennis team went 5-1 in singles play on the final day of the Tribe Invitational, as senior Victoria Khanevskaya and junior Claire Dreyer each won their singles flights to cap a strong performance in the Jayhawks’ second tournament of the season.

Khanevskaya defeated Penn State’s Sarah Henderson, 6-2, 7-6(5), to win the Marion Gengler Flight, while Dreyer cruised past Harvard’s Crystal Yen, 6-2, 6-0, in the finals of the Julie Shiflet Flight Sunday afternoon. Both remain undefeated in singles play this season with first-place finishes in their respective draws at the Jayhawk Invitational two weeks ago.

Dreyer also teamed-up with freshman Anastasija Trubica to win the Michelle O Doubles Flight on Saturday. Kansas finished the William & Mary-hosted tournament with a combined 19-9 record in both singles and doubles play.

Sophomore Maria Belen Ludueña also played in the finals of the Megan Moulton-Levy Flight, but an undisclosed injury forced her to retire two games into the second set against after losing the first, 7-5, to Virginia Commonwealth’s Olga Terteac.

Freshman Maria Jose Cardona and Junior Haley Fournier each took third place in their respective singles flights. Fournier routed Melissa Esnal Olguin of Old Dominion, 6-2, 6-0, in the third-place match of the Kristine Kurth Flight, while Cardona needed a third-set tiebreaker to fight off Harvard’s Amanda Li, 1-6, 7-6(5), 10-8 (tiebreaker), in the Lauren Nikolaus Flight.

In the consolation final of the Cherie Dow Flight, junior Paulina Los also used a third-set tiebreaker to take down Harvard’s Natalie Blosser, 4-6, 6-4, 10-4 (tiebreaker), en route to a fifth-place finish.

Up Next

Kansas will be back in action Oct. 19-21 for the second Jayhawk Invitational of the fall, which will be held at Jayhawk Tennis Center in Lawrence. Meanwhile, senior Monica Pezzotti and junior Dylan Windom will travel to Tulsa, Okla. for doubles play at the ITA Regional Championships, which run from Oct. 18-22.
