Jayhawks Finish 13th at Windon Memorial Classic

The Kansas men’s golf team finished in 13th place at the Windon Memorial Classic at Lake Shore Country Club (par-71, 6667 yards) in Glencoe, Ill. with a three-round score of 899. Junior Walt Koelbel shot the best round of the day for the Jayhawks with a final-round 74.<?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>

“This tournament was very disappointing for us,” said head coach Kit Grove. “There really are no excuses for how we played.”

Koelbel improved each round of the tournament by one stroke and finished the event tied for 52nd place with a final score of 225.

Junior Zach Pederson was the top-finisher for the Jayhawks after carding a final-round 75. Pederson finished the event tied for 36th place.

Freshman Brad Hopfinger shot a final-round 77 to finish tied for 55th in his hometown event. Freshman Nate Barbee carded a score of 76 to tie for 60th place. Junior Andrew Storm shot a final-day 79 to finish in 67th place.

Northwestern, the host school of the event, was able to top Kent State by one stroke to claim the team title. Mike Van Sickle of Marquette and Clayton Rask of Minnesota tied for medalist honors with 206 strokes.

The Jayhawks will next be in action on Oct. 15-16 when they travel to Palm Springs, Calif. to compete in the Prestige at PGA West.
