Jayhawks in the Pros #9

LAWRENCE, Kan. – After five weeks of the National Football League season, six Jayhawks remain on NFL rosters with several of them making an impact for their teams. In addition, two Jayhawks are playing well in the Canadian Football League. This week’s Jayhawks in the Pros is highlighted by cornerback Chris Harris, who made his first start of the season on Sunday, and Marcus Henry, who recorded his first touchdown of the year in CFL action.
Dezmon Briscoe
Wide receiver Dezmon Briscoe is in his third season in the NFL and first with the Washington Redskins. Briscoe was inactive for Washington’s 24-17 loss to the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday at FedEx Field. Briscoe has played in three games this season, but is still looking for his first catch in a Washington uniform. He signed with the Redskins after being released by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in late July. In his two NFL seasons, Briscoe has played in 19 games and tallied 41 catches for 480 yards and seven touchdowns. He was originally drafted by the Cincinnati Bengals in the sixth round of the 2010 NFL Draft.
Anthony Collins
Offensive tackle Anthony Collins is in his fifth season in the NFL with the Cincinnati Bengals. Collins was in uniform, but did not play for the fifth-straight week in Cincinnati’s 17-13 loss to Miami Sunday. Collins has not played in any of the Bengals’ games this season, missing the first one with an injury and has dressed, but not seen action, in the last four. He has played in 39 games in his NFL career and made 18 starts at offensive tackle. Collins was originally a fourth-round selection by Cincinnati in the 2008 NFL Draft.
Chris Harris
Cornerback Chris Harris is in his second season with the Denver Broncos.Harris started at corner in Denver’s 31-21 loss to the New England Patriots at Gillette Stadium Sunday. The second-year cornerback recorded a career-high seven tackles in the game. Harris has played in 20 games in his NFL career, making five starts. He has recorded 90 tackles, broken up seven passes and made one interception. Harris signed with the Broncos as an undrafted free agent following the 2011 NFL Draft.
Steven Johnson
Linebacker Steven Johnson is in his first season with the Denver Broncos after making the team as an undrafted free agent. Johnson was inactive for Denver’s 31-21 loss to the New England Patriots Sunday. He has played in two of Denver’s first five games this season, but has not recorded any stats. Johnson was signed by the Broncos as an undrafted free agent following the 2012 NFL Draft in April.
Darrell Stuckey
Safety Darrell Stuckey is in his third season with San Diego, and first serving as the Chargers’ special teams captain. Stuckey recorded a nice open field tackle of Darren Sproles on a punt return in San Diego’s 31-24 loss to the New Orleans Saints at the Superdome Sunday night. He has played in all five of the Chargers’ games this season and has four tackles and a fumble recovery. In his career, Stuckey has played in 20 games and made 17 tackles. He was drafted by the Chargers in the fourth round of the 2010 NFL Draft.
Aqib Talib
Cornerback Aqib Talib is in his fifth season in the NFL and fourth as a starting corner for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Talib and the Buccaneers were idle on Sunday, but will host the Kansas City Chiefs on Oct. 14. This season, Talib has started all four games for the Bucs and made 21 tackles with seven pass breakups and an interception. In his career, the former KU All-American has made 182 tackles, recorded 53 pass breakups and 18 interceptions. He was a first-round pick by Tampa Bay in the 2008 NFL Draft.

Jon Cornish
Tailback Jon Cornish is in his sixth CFL season, all with the Calgary Stampeders. The reigning Canadian Player of the Week was held in check Saturday as the BC Lions downed Calgary, 27-22. Cornish rushed for 61 yards on 10 carries and also added 32 yards receiving on two catches. This season, “Kid Canada” has rushed for 1,188 yards on 192 carries with nine touchdowns on the ground. It marks the first 1,000-yard season of Cornish’s career. He has also recorded 29 receptions for 215 yards and a touchdown. In his six-year career, Cornish has rushed for 3,058 yards and 21 touchdowns to go along with 79 catches for 532 yards and five receiving touchdowns. He signed with Calgary following the end of his KU career in 2007.
Marcus Henry
Wide receiver Marcus Henry is in his second year in the CFL with the Edmonton Eskimos. Henry enjoyed his best game of the season Friday, recording five catches for 45 yards and a touchdown in Edmonton’s 35-20 win over Hamilton. In four games this season, Henry has recorded 19 catches for 225 yards and one score. In his CFL career, Henry has 52 receptions for 609 yards and two touchdowns. He signed with Edmonton during the 2011 NFL season after being released by the New York Jets in training camp.
