Oct. 10, 2012

IRVING, Texas – The 2012-13 Kansas women’s basketball team was projected to finish fourth in the Big 12 Conference this season, as released in the league’s preseason poll Wednesday morning in a vote among the conference head coaches.

Defending national champion Baylor was selected as the preseason favorite for the fourth consecutive year, while Oklahoma and West Virginia tied for second, followed by Kansas seven votes apart.

“The poll matches up with what I said (Tuesday) at our media day,” head coach Bonnie Henrickson said. “I said that I thought that there would be three or four of us that are in a battle for second, third and fourth.”

Baylor collected 81 votes, behind nine first-place votes, and Oklahoma and West Virginia each received 65 tallies, while KU earned 58. The remainder of the poll, in rank order, included: Texas, Iowa State, Oklahoma State, Texas Tech, Kansas State and TCU.

The Big 12 has ranked No. 1 in conference RPI for the past five seasons and has led the nation in attendance 13 consecutive years.

Head coaches and select student-athletes will convene in Dallas on Oct. 25 for the annual Big 12 Women’s Basketball Media Day. The American Airlines Center will serve as the host for the 2013 Phillips 66 Big 12 Women’s Basketball Championship March 8-11. The Big 12 Digital Network will provide live coverage of Media Day on Big12Sports.com in addition to extensive coverage on the Conference’s official social media platforms.

Henrickson and the Jayhawks will open the 2012-13 season on Oct. 28, when Kansas hosts Washburn in the first of two exhibition games. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m., at Allen Fieldhouse.
