Swimming and Diving Hosts Busy Weekend

Oct. 13, 2004

LAWRENCE, Kan. – The University of Kansas swimming and diving team will host a flurry of meets this weekend starting with their season-opening dual meet against Big 12 opponent Texas, at 6 p.m., Oct. 14. The following day, Oct. 15, Kansas will host the 2004 Big 12 Relays, which are set to get underway at 9 a.m. The Jayhawks will wrap up the weekend against Texas A&M, at 10 a.m., Oct. 16, in another Big 12 dual meet. All of the action will take place in Robinson Natatorium.

“We are really excited about this weekend. Texas is a tough opponent to start the season with and hosting the Big 12 Relays is great for the University of Kansas. Hopefully we can get a big crowd to see some of the best swimmers in the nation,” head coach Clark Campbell said. “Finishing the weekend with Texas A&M is a good way to wrap up the busy weekend. We will be able to see how we stand within the conference after this weekend’s competition.”

Kansas, which last hosted the Relays in 2000, finished in sixth place at the 2003 Big 12 Relays held in Ames, Iowa. Texas won the team championship scoring 119 team points, 28.5 points ahead of second-place Texas A&M. The Jayhawks are also looking to avenge last season’s loss to Texas A&M in dual action in College Station, Texas. Kansas and Texas did not compete in dual action last season.

Following this weekend’s events, Kansas will travel to Springfield, Mo., to face Southwest Missouri State on Oct. 29. The following day, Oct. 30, the Jayhawks will renew the Border Showdown rivalry when they square-off against Missouri in Columbia, Mo.
