Kansas Falls In Three At No. 7 Texas

Texas extended its winning streak to eight games Saturday night as they defeated the University of Kansas volleyball team 3-0 at Gregory Gym.<?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>

<?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>Kansas, now 10-9 overall and 3-6 in the Big 12, fell by scores of 30-14, 30-22 and 30-21. Texas improved to 11-4 and 8-1 in league play.

Senior Emily Brown and Freshman Karina Garlington led the Jayhawks with seven kills a piece. Brown also chipped in a team-high 17 assists and eight digs in the effort. Freshman Melissa Manda matched Brown with eight digs of her own.

Junior Natalie Uhart and Freshman Jenna Kaiser each added six kills. Uhart also provided three block assists and a service ace on the night for a team-high 8.5 points.

Texas opened the match with a 7-1 run in game one to take an early lead. The Longhorns proceeded to attack with a .382 hitting percentage en route to its 30-14 victory.

Kansas came out stronger in game two taking a one point lead at 3-2 before the Longhorns stole the lead back at 5-4. KU stayed close until Texas reeled off six unanswered points to go up 14-7. The Jayhawks chipped away at the deficit using kills by Uhart and Kaiser to come within five at 20-15. Kansas closed the game even more when a block by Kaiser and Savannah Noyes made the score 24-20, but the Longhorns used a 6-2 run to close out the game 30-22 behind a match-best .463 hitting efficiency.

In game three, the teams were tied at five when back-to-back Texas errors gave Kansas a two point advantage. The Longhorns tied it back up at nine and proceeded to take over the lead with a 6-0 run. KU cut a seven point deficit to four trailing 20-16 thanks to a kill by Brown, but another run by Texas put the Longhorns out of reach as Texas capped the match with a 30-21 victory.

Kansas returns home Wednesday for a 7 p.m. match against Baylor.
