Boonraksasat, Potee Bring a Little Something Extra to Tournaments

Oct. 13, 2011

LAWRENCE, Kan. – The KU women’s golf team have been starting every tournament in a very unique way. Sophomore’s Meghan Potee and Thanuttra Boonraksasat decided they needed some inspiration for their tournaments and started writing ‘Believe’ on their wrists.

“Our assistant coach last year, Sarah Trew, had a tattoo on her wrist that said ‘Believe’ so we kind of got it from that,” Potee said. “Last year we would always write ‘Believe’ but we try to think up different sayings every tournament. During the last tournament we had a quote that said, ‘be like a duck; calm on the surface, paddling like heck underneath’ so we wrote ‘be like a duck’ on our wrists. “

‘One step at a time’ has become the common theme for the Jayhawks the past couple of weeks. Boonraksasat says they are always thinking up new sayings right before the tournament.

“At the Ole Miss tournament, Meghan and I didn’t play very well and she told me she needed some love so I decided to write lucky on her wrist,” Boonraksasat said. “Then at the Marilynn Smith Invitational, we were singing ‘One Step at a Time’ in the vans and that’s what motivated us throughout the tournament.”

No matter where the inspiration comes from, the Jayhawks want to have something to bring their confidence up for each shot. Whether it’s a song, a quote or even just a word they think will bring them luck, Boonraksasat and Potee know the saying will give them that extra boost they need during tournament play.

Kansas will travel to Norman, Okla., for the Susie Maxwell Berning Classic October 16-18 at the Jimmie Austin University of Oklahoma Golf Course (par-72/6,327 yards). The three-day tournament will have staggered tee-times Sunday and Monday with a shotgun start to the final round on Tuesday.
