KU Softball Wraps Up Fall Ball

LINCOLN, Neb. – The Kansas softball team concluded `Fall Ball’ by going 2-2 in the Big Red Fall Classic hosted by Nebraska last weekend at Bowlin Stadium. The Jayhawks defeated Nebraska-Omaha 8-0 and 5-4 and came up short against Nebraska (1-0) and Colorado State (1-0) in the two-day event.

KU opened the weekend with an eight-inning 1-0 loss to host Nebraska in a Big 12 Conference preview. Left fielder Heather Stanley and center fielder Jackie Vasquez paced KU with two hits apiece. Veteran right-handers Kassie Humphreys (starter) and Serena Settlemier each pitched 3.2 innings in the loss.

In the next game, the Jayhawks went on to score seven runs in the bottom of the fifth in an 8-0 shut out of Nebraska-Omaha. Stanley again went 2-for-2 while Settlemier pitched the first two innings and notched her first home run of the fall. Freshman lefty Christina Ross pitched the last three shut-out innings and struck out five. Destiny Frankenstein ended the five-inning run-rule with a home run.

On Sunday, freshman catcher Elle Pottorf went 2-for-3 with a double as KU fell short to Colorado State, 1-0. In the next game against Nebraska-Omaha, Settlemier blasted a two-run homer in the Jayhawks’ 5-4 win.

The Jayhawks open the 2005 season Feb. 4-6 at the Pepsi Classic in Tucson, Ariz.
