Kansas in 16th Place After Day One at Prestige at PGA West

Brad Hopfinger led the way for the Kansas men’s golf team during the opening-day at the Prestige at PGA West after carding rounds of 73 and 72. The team stands in 16th place after the first day of play at the Greg Norman Course at PGA West in Palm Springs, Calif.<?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>

“I was really happy with how Brad (Hopfinger) played today as a true freshman,” said head coach Kit Grove. “It was another tough day for the team, but we knew this year was going to be a learning experience.”

Hopfinger currently sits in a tie of 20th place after a first-day score of 145. Hopfinger will be attempting to top his top career-finish of a tie for 22nd at the 2007 Kansas Invitational.

Junior Walt Koelbel continued his steady fall season with rounds of 75 and 74 during day one to finish tied for 43rd. Koelbel is the only Jayhawk to compete in all events as a member of the team during the fall season.

Junior Zach Pederson shot a first-day total of 154 to finish day one tied for 72nd. Senior Joey Mundy and sophomore Bobby Knowles both carded first-day scores of 157 to finish the day tied for 77th.

Charlotte currently leads the tournament with a first-day score of 566. Clayton Rask of Minnesota leads tops the individual leaderboard after firing a pair of 68’s.
