Jayhawks Ready for Final Fall Ball Game

Oct. 15, 2012

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Nearly two weeks separates the Kansas softball team from its most recent fall exhibition game to the Jayhawks’ final game of the fall as the Jayhawks prepare to host Avila, Monday at 6 p.m.

When the Jayhawks moved to 6-0 in fall ball action following a shutout victory over Baker on Oct. 3, head coach Megan Smith was relishing in the fact that her team would have a sizable break to rest, heal and narrow its focus on the remaining objectives before the allotted amount of fall team practices comes to a close. On Monday evening, the Jayhawks can reveal their most recent progress.

Senior Maggie Hull heads into the matchup leading the Jayhawk offense, as she has connected on a grandslam in each of her last two fall games. In their last time out, Hull was one of four Jayhawks to go yard against the Wildcats. Fellow senior Mariah Montgomery drilled a solo shot, while freshmen duo Chaley Brickey and Alex Hugo homered during KU’s seven-run fourth inning against Baker.

Brickey has been red-hot through the fall, as well as Hugo, who has crushed a grand slam this fall. In six fall games, KU has outscored its opponents, 60-1.

In the circle, freshman Kelsey Kessler, sophomore Alicia Pille and senior Morgan Druhan may each see time as Smith has used each intermittently throughout the fall to get each pitcher reps. In the last time out, Kessler earned the win after tossing four scoreless innings in which she gave up three hits, two walks and struck out six. Pille struck out the side in the fifth to close out the game.

First pitch is set for Monday at 6 p.m. inside Arrocha Ballpark and is open to the public.
