KU Women's Golf Moves Up in Norman

Oct. 16, 2012

NORMAN, Okla. – Consistent play from freshman Yupaporn Kawinpakorn, junior Gabby DiMarco and senior Audrey Yowell allowed the Kansas women’s golf team to move up two spots to fifth place after two rounds of the Susie Maxwell Berning Classic at the Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club in Norman, Okla., Tuesday.

Kawinpakorn, DiMarco and Yowell each shot a 3-over 75 on Tuesday. Kawinpakorn’s two-round total 146 (+2) ties her for seventh in the 96-golfer field. She is six strokes behind leader Lindsey Weaver of Notre Dame who is at 140 (-4) on the par-72 course.

As a team, KU shot a 303 (+15) on Tuesday under windy conditions and is at 600 (+24) through two rounds, one stroke behind fourth-place Notre Dame (599). Entering the day seventh, the Jayhawks moved up to fifth in the 18-team field, which includes eight nationally-ranked teams. Host Oklahoma leads the event with a two-round 579 (+3) and takes a 15-stroke lead over second-place Texas Tech (594) into Wednesday’s final round.

“I think we handled ourselves very well, mentally,” KU head coach Erin O’Neil said. “It was very windy, especially for our back nine. We did a good job of keeping our composure and not hitting the panic button when the wind picked up.”

On Tuesday, DiMarco improved by one stroke from her first round with a 75. She is tied for 24th with a two-round score of 151 (+7). KU junior Meghan Potee, who contracted the flu before the event started Monday, carded a 78 (+6) Tuesday is one stroke behind DiMarco at 152 (+8), which is tied for 28th. Yowell’s 75 was three shots better than her opening round and she is one behind Potee at 153 (+9) and is tied for 35th. Junior Thanuttra Boonraksasat is at 155 (+11) after shooting a 79 Tuesday. She is tied for 49th, while KU freshman Ann-Kathrin Wuensch, who is playing as an individual, shot 87 Tuesday and is 87th entering Wednesday with a 166.

“Meghan felt a lot better today and she kept her head, even through the ups and downs,” O’Neil said.

The final of the three rounds will be played on Wednesday, Oct. 17. Live scoring can be followed via golfstat.com.

“It’s supposed to be just as windy heading from the north, which will be a little tougher than normal,” O’Neill said. “I think if we make some more birdies and stay away from the doubles (bogeys) we have we’ll be in good shape tomorrow.”
