KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – Kansas golfer Doug Quinones fired five birdies in round one en route to a one-over par 73 and followed it up with a second round score of 72 to finish the first day of The Invitational at The Ocean Course one spot out of the top 10 in 11th place with a 36-hole aggregate of one-over par.

Quinones struggled early in his first round with a bogey, a double bogey and one triple bogey to be five-over par through five holes, but Quinones did not shoot worse than par on any hole the rest of the way in and notched two birdies in his final four holes to post an opening-round 73. Kansas head golf coach Kit Grove said the senior recovered well to post a good score.

“Doug actually got off to a pretty rough start,” said Grove. “Then he settled down and shot a 33 (3-under) on our back nine. He played pretty solid in the afternoon, too. Overall, it was a pretty solid day for Doug.”

Quinones’ 72 led the Jayhawks in a second round where the team cut five strokes off of its first round total. However, Kansas finished the day 11th out of 12 teams with a two-round total of 23-over par, which Grove partially attributed to the golfers trying to do too much on a tough course.

“It’s pretty tough when we can throw out two scores, and we’re still having to count a 78 and a 79,” said Grove, referring to The Invitational’s format of allowing six golfers to compete instead of the usual five while still only counting four scores each round for the team total. “It’s a hard golf course where you have to think pretty well. When you get out of position, you have to just try to make a bogey. It’s going to host the 2012 PGA Championship for a reason. If you try to do too much, you’re going to make a seven or an eight. We had everything all the way up to a 10 today, so it’s very disappointing with the overall outcome.”

Individually, four of the six Jayhawks equaled or bettered their first round scores in round two, including junior Chris Gilbert, who posted two rounds of 74 to finish four-over par and tied for 22nd through 36 holes. Fellow junior Alex Gutesha improved by six strokes in the second round, posting a one-over par 73 to climb 15 spots into a tie for 40th entering the final day. Coach Grove hoped the Jayhawks could build upon an improved second round to increase their standing in the 12-team tournament being hosted by College of Charleston.

“Hopefully we’ll have four of our guys play decent tomorrow to move up the leaderboard a little bit,” said Grove.

Kansas will begin its final round of The Invitational Tuesday at 7:30 a.m. Central.
