KU Women's Golf Finishes Ninth in Norman

NORMAN, Okla. – Kansas junior Meghan Potee fought through the flu-like symptoms to be KU’s women’s golf top finisher at the Susie Maxwell Berning Classic at the Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club in Norman, Okla., Wednesday.

Potee contracted flu symptoms before the three-round event on Monday and ended with a three-round 226 (+10) which tied for 24th in the 96-golfer field. Potee carded a 2-over 74 on Wednesday, which matched her first-round score on Monday.

As a team, Kansas finished ninth in the 18-team field, with the top-eight finishing teams being ranked nationally. KU shot a three-round 907 (+43), which was two strokes from tying for seventh place with No. 50 Coastal Carolina and No. 32 Texas State at 905 (+41). The Jayhawks shot a 307 (+19) on Wednesday. No. 18 Oklahoma won the event on its home course shooting an 859 (-5), which included an impressive 8-under 280 on Wednesday. No. 20 Notre Dame was runner-up with an 888 (+24).

Potee, KU freshman Yupaporn Kawinpakorn and sophomore Gabby DiMarco each finished within three strokes of each other. Despite shooting an 81 Wednesday, Kawinpakorn finished tied for 31st place with a three-round 227 (+11) and DiMarco shot a 228 (+12), which tied for 42nd. DiMarco carded a 77 (+5) Wednesday, while senior Audrey Yowell tied for 55th with a 231 (+15), including a 78 (+6) in her final round. Junior Thanuttra Boonraksasat shot a 78 (+6) Wednesday and her three-round 233 (+17) placed her tied for 63rd. KU freshman Ann-Kathrin Wuensch, who played as an individual, shot her best of three rounds on Wednesday, 78 (+6), and had a three-round 244 (+28) to finish tied for 87th.

Oklahoma’s Chirapat Jao-Javanil won the medalist honors with a three-round 209 (-7), which included a 4-under 68 on Wednesday. Sarah Schober of Redlands Community College and Lindsey Weaver of Notre Dame tied for second with a 211 (-5).

Kansas has three top-10 finishes in its four events through the fall season. Included are back-to-back tournament titles at the Marilynn Smith Sunflower Invitational and the Price’s “Give ‘Em Five” Intercollegiate. Kansas will conclude its fall 2012 season Oct. 28-29, at the Edwin Watts/Palmetto Intercollegiate at the Kiawah Island Oak Point Golf Course in Kiawah Island, S.C.
