Svistun Advances to Main Singles Draw at ITA Central Regionals

<?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>TULSA, Okla. – University of Kansas sophomore Yuliana Svistun advanced to the main draw of singles tournament after winning each of her qualifying matches, and junior Stephanie Smith fell one win short, as KU completed day one of the Wilson/ITA Central Region Championships in Tulsa, Okla.<?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>

Other Kansas players joining Svistun in the tournament’s main singles draw are the bracket’s No. 5 seed, junior Elizaveta Avdeeva, the 14th-seeded Kunigunda Dorn, and sophomore Edina Horvath.

Svistun advanced through qualifying by defeating Oral Roberts’ Paige McKinney, following a first round bye. The Ufa, Russia, native is one of 11 athletes who advanced to the main draw, filling out the 64 player bracket.

After winning her first contest on Wednesday over Arkansas’s Carly Dixon, Smith fell to Tulsa’s Agostina Santoro in her bid to move on.

KU will also have two tandems in the doubles draw, which will begin on Thursday. The Jayhawks’ duos of Avdeeva and Horvath and Svistun and Dorn will compete in the 64-team field.

Play in both the singles and doubles brackets will begin on Thursday and run throughout the weekend. Visit nightly to view results from each day of the Championships.
