Avdeeva, seeded ninth in the singles bracket, defeated BoiseState’s Klaudia Wlodarczyk, 6-4, 6-1, to advance. The Obninsk, Russia native, who made it to the quarterfinals at last year’s event, will open second-round play on Friday against Oklahoma’s Chelsea Orr.

Avdeeva also played well in doubles action on Thursday, as she and Horvath, ranked 36th in the nation and seeded second in the tournament, followed a first-round bye by defeating Utah’s Karine Bourdages and Jane Kryunchova, 9-7. The tandem, who won the doubles title at the Championships last fall, will look to move into the quarterfinals when it faces Arkansas’ Audrey Bordeleau and Delia Damaschin on Friday morning.

The Jayhawks’ tandem of sophomore Kunigunda Dorn and freshman Maria Martinez threatened to join their teammates in the round-of-16 after a first-round win over Oral Roberts’ Emily Arkel and Taylor Pippen. However, the duo was eliminated in the second round by BYU’s fourth-seeded pair of Ele Carney and Anastasia Syrkovg, 8-1.

In other singles action, junior Yuliana Svistun, who won two qualifying singles matches on Wednesday to earn a spot in the main draw, was defeated in the first round by BYU’s Liza Ezhova, 6-4, 7-6. Dorn was also eliminated in the opening round by Tulsa Thalia Barriga, 6-2, 6-1.

The tournament will resume play on Friday with two rounds of singles and one round of doubles action, as well as the start of consolation play.
