Avdeeva and Horvath Advance to Quarterfinals at ITA Central Region Championships

<?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>TULSA, Okla. – University of Kansas senior Elizaveta Avdeeva and junior Edina Horvath continued their quest for a second-straight ITA Central Region doubles championship on Friday as the duo advanced to the tournament’s quarterfinals.<?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>

The tandem, ranked 36th in the nation and seeded second at the event, defeated Arkansas’ Audrey Bordeleau and Delia Damaschin in a thrilling tiebreak match, eventually coming out on top, 9-8 (5). The pair will try for a berth in the semifinals on Saturday as it faces Oklahoma’s 12th-seeded duo of Orr and Constantinesc.

Avdeeva also opened play on Friday looking for a spot in the quarterfinals of the main singles draw. However, the Obninsk, Russia could not advance as she was eliminated by Oklahoma’s Chelsea Orr, 6-3, 6-3.

In consolation singles play, junior Yuliana Svistun took Saint Louis’ Amanda Hellberg to three sets, but eventually fell, 6-4, 5-7, 1-0 (7).

Avdeeva and Horvath will be back on the courts on Saturday at 1:30 pm.
