Jayhawks Enter Final Round at Bill Ross Intercollegiate in Fourth Place

Nate Barbee and Jeff Bell both fired second round 71’s to help the Kansas men’s golf team improve on its first round score by 12 strokes and enter the final round in fourth place at the Bill Ross Intercollegiate at Blue Hills Country Club.

The team struggled late in the first round and carded a 305 in the morning, before shooting a 293 in the second round.

“We actually played solid today outside of every guy losing a few strokes coming in the first round,” said head coach Kit Grove. “The course we pretty windy and because of that it was tough to get the ball close to the hole and the greens out here are tough.”

Barbee, who leads the team in scoring average, shot rounds of 76 and 71 to enter the final round tied for seventh place. Barbee will attempting to earn his fourth top-10 finish in four tries this season.

Barbee is joined in the top-20 by freshman Alex Gutesha and junior Jeff Bell. Gutesha fired rounds of 75 and 74 to place tied for 13th. Bell rebounded from a first round 79 with a second round 71 and is tied for 17th place.

Senior Bryan Hackenberg shot a pair of 77’s to place tied for 34th. Freshman Chris Gilbert shot rounds of 77 and 78 to enter the final day tied for 37th.

Freshman Dan Waite, a native of England, is competing in the event as an individual. Waite shot rounds of 79 and 76 and joins Gilbert in a tie for 37th place.

Central Arkansas shot a first-day 582 and leads second place Wichita St. by ten strokes. Dustin Garza, of Wichita St., leads all individuals after firing rounds of 72 and 68.
