Avdeeva, Horvath Advance in Singles and Doubles Play at ITA Central Regionals

<?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>TULSA, Okla.Junior Elizaveta Avdeeva and sophomore Edina Horvath advanced to the second round of the singles bracket, and together, the duo moved on to the round of 16 in the doubles draw, highlighting the University of Kansas’ day at the Wilson/ITA Central Region Championships.<?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>

KU’s Kunigunda Dorn lost in the first round of the singles bracket to Arkansas’ Nanar Airepetian, while sophomore Yuliana Svistun, who earned a spot in the main draw after two qualifying wins on Wednesday, also fell on Thursday in the opening round.

Avdeeva and Horvath are now in the round of 32 in singles play.

In doubles actions, Avdeeva and Horvath, who had a first round bye, beat Tulsa’s Grimes and Zabeleta, 8-6, to move on.

The Jayhawks’ other duo, Dorn and Svistun, won their opening round match, and will look to join Avdeeva and Horvath by advancing to the third round when play resumes on Friday.

The Championships will start up again on Friday morning, with action scheduled to take place in the singles and doubles draws, as well as the start of consolation play, which several Jayhawks will compete in.
