Avdeeva in Quarterfinals at ITA Central Regionals

<?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>TULSA, Okla. – University of Kansas junior Elizaveta Avdeeva won each of her singles matches on Friday, advancing to the quarterfinals of the Wilson/ITA Central Region Championships in Tulsa, Okla.<?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>
The fifth-seeded Obninsk, Russia, native defeated OklahomaState’s Lauren Simmons and WichitaState’s Stephanie Dalmacio, and will face Imke Reimers from Nebraska in Saturday’s quarterfinal round.
In other singles action, sophomore Edina Horvath, who advanced to the second round on Thursday, lost her first match of the day to Arkansas’ Ela Kaluder.
KU also had two doubles tandems alive in the doubles draw on Friday. The duo’s of Avdeeva and Horvath and freshman Kunigunda Dorn and sophomore Yuliana Svistun each won their first contest of the day, moving on to the round of 16. Avdeeva and Horvath also won their second match, and will play in the quarterfinals on Saturday.
In consolation singles play, Svistun, Dorn and junior Stephanie Smith all won their first match on Friday. Svistun then won a second contest, moving on to the round of 16, and Dorn will attempt to join her when play begins on Saturday.
The Championships will pick back up on Saturday morning and run throughout the day and into Sunday.
