Red Team Slips Past Blue Team in Fall Baseball Scrimmage

LAWRENCE, Kan. – The Red Team scored three runs in the first inning and held on to post a 3-2 victory over the Blue Team as the University of Kansas baseball team continued its fall scrimmages at Hoglund Ballpark on Wednesday.

Junior outfielder A.J. Van Slyke got things started for the Red Team in the bottom of the first inning, as he doubled off of Blue Team starter Matt Lane. Van Slyke scored on an RBI single by junior shortstop Ritchie Price. Senior infielder Andy Scholl followed with a triple to plate Price, and scored later in the inning on an RBI groundout by junior centerfielder Gus Milner, making the score 3-0 Red Team after one inning. Scholl and Van Slyke both finished the game with a team-high two hits.

Lane was replaced by senior pitcher Michael Fitch who threw six scoreless innings.

On the mound, Red Team starter Clint Schambach threw seven solid innings and allowed five hits and one unearned run. The senior also collected 11 strikeouts during the contest.

Senior infielder Mike Dudley of the Blue Team, who finished the day 3-for-4, cut the Red lead to 3-2 with a RBI single in the eighth inning before Red Team pitcher Ryotaro Hayakawa worked out of a one-out runners on the conrenrs jam to send the game to the ninth inning with the Red Team still leading by one run.

Senior pitcher Brandon Johnson pitched a perfect ninth inning for the Red Team to collect his first save of the fall season.

The Jayhawks will have an off day on Thursday before resuming fall workouts with a three-game series at Hoglund Ballpark over the weekend. Game times this weekend are scheduled for 4:30 p.m. (Friday), 12:30 p.m. (Saturday) and 11:00 a.m. (Sunday).
